Enough with the light mood, let’s get down to the business of the day. My motivation for this post came from a series of adverts I have been seeing about some pretty wedding rings for sale online, specifically in Nigeria and the kind of rings they turned out to be. The comments under those posts got me really worried because I happen to take wedding rings very seriously. On my own list, the ring, which is the symbol of marriage is just as important as the marriage and definitely more important than the wedding ceremony (my POV though).
With the present craze for a “bella naija” kind of proposal and wedding, babes tagging their boyfriends in their dream proposal images/stories, one can’t help but wonder if these girls actually take the marriage as seriously as they take the wedding. You really don’t wear your wedding dress after the wedding (except for those who decide to amend, cut sew, etc), but your band stays with you forever (I hope you are now seeing my point). So when I say the selection of the ring is just as important as the groom/bride, please don’t judge me…lol.
So what’s the best criteria for choosing that special ring for that special girl, and if you happen to go ring shopping with your husband-to-be, tagging your boo in a ring picture, or you are buying your ring yourself (don’t ask me if that happens o, I only know I have heard stories), what exactly should you look out for?
I know nine of ten people will scream STONE !!!! I’m sorry to disappoint you, but what’s the worth of a stone if the stone is a copy, or if the band around it is of a low quality? The first thing you should actually look out for is the band quality, is it gold, platinum or sterling silver? If gold, white or yellow, and what is its purity level or karat number? Is it 12k, 14k, 22k or 24k? If platinum, is it 950 PLAT or 900 PLAT purity? If sterling silver, is it of .999, .958, .925, or .900 purity?
Personally, I subscribe to gold and platinum wedding bands for those who like the eternity feel of it (no issues like change in color or corrosion), and I do have a problem with sterling silver wedding bands because on my side of the world where wives especially are known to wear their bands and never remove it, in heat or cold, bathing or washing, sterling silver will reduce in purity when it reacts with atmospheric pollutants and salt (from your sweat too), eventually CORRODE and turn black (don’t let me bore you with chemical terms). It might take a year or two but it still will (speaking from experience with my 925 sterling silver neck chain I almost had an eternity bond with, everyday for 1 year precisely).
And for those who might change wedding bands after a while, due to increase in size or just trying to keep up with fashion trend, sterling silver has little to no market value in Nigeria and a not too substantial value in Western countries (well except it’s in its bullion bar form or molded into an antique-pretty heavy stuff) .
